FED-Vol. 216, Unsteady Flows -1995 ASME 1995 RECURRENCE OF BALLOON TREATED INTRACRANIAL TERMINAL ANEURYSM: A STUDY WITH PULSATILE BLOOD FLOW
نویسنده
چکیده
ABSIRAcr To identify the hemodynamic mechanisms associated with recurrence of intracranial aneurysms following the treatment with balloon or coil occlusion. Pulsatile flow in a terminal recurrent intracranial aneurysm was numerically simulated based on the physiological pulsatile flow observed in the middle cerebral artery. In order to quantify the reason for recurrence of terminal aneurysm. flow parameters including local maximum wall shear stress and pressure drop at the neck of the aneurysm was calculated. Though the maximum shear stress at the right neck of the aneurysm after the insertion of the balloon is significantly reduced. it is still two and a half times more than the normal maximum shear stress. It is observed that due to the residual neck left after the insertion of the balloon an inadequate reduction in shear stress is achieved at the right neck where the recurrence of aneurysm is initiated. It is clear that the structural alteration of the endothelial layers in the aneurysm neck, where the shear stress was high. was critical.

Hemodynamic changes in recurrent intracranial terminal aneurysm after endovascular treatment.
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES Multiple cases of recurrence of aneurysms after endovascular treatment have been reported. The purpose of the current hemodynamic study was to identify changes in shear stress and pressure associated with the recurrence of terminal intracranial aneurysms after endovascular occlusion. METHODS Using a finite element method, a pulsed flow with a non-Newtonian viscosity o...
متن کاملNewtonian and Non-Newtonian Blood Flow Simulation after Arterial Stenosis- Steady State and Pulsatile Approaches
Arterial stenosis, for example Atherosclerosis, is one of the most serious forms of arterial disease in the formation of which hemodynamic factors play a significant role. In the present study, a 3-D rigid carotid artery with axisymmetric stenosis with 75% reduction in cross-sectional area is considered. Laminar blood flow is assumed to have both Newtonian and non-Newtonian behavior (generalize...

Background and Purpose—Stent-assisted coiling has expanded the treatment of intracranial aneurysms, but the rates of procedure-related neurological complications and the incidence of angiographic aneurysm recurrence of this novel treatment are not yet well known. We present our experience with stent-assisted coiling with special emphasis on procedure-related neurological complications and incid...

متن کاملBlood flow dynamics in saccular aneurysm models of the basilar artery.
Blood flow dynamics under physiologically realistic pulsatile conditions plays an important role in the growth, rupture, and surgical treatment of intracranial aneurysms. The temporal and spatial variations of wall pressure and wall shear stress in the aneurysm are hypothesized to be correlated with its continuous expansion and eventual rupture. In addition, the assessment of the velocity field...
